What Class Should I Register In?

Advanced: Beyond the basics.
You are ready to take Advanced classes, if most of the following apply:

Speaking
  • You can ask and answer questions and participate in simple conversations.
  • You can tell people what you (or your friends and family) did last week, last year, last Summer..., using simple sentences with verbs in the past.
  • OK.
You may still hesitate (and make mistakes) when attempting to perform these or other similar tasks, but (perhaps with some help) often you can.
  • You have been using your Spanish (in grammar exercises drills) to:
    • give simple instructions to somebody (commands).
    • give simple advice or recommendations to other people.
    • tell what other people have advised or recommended you to do.
    • express your opinions and/or your feelings (hopes / fears) about present or past events or situations.
  • Reading
  • You can understand main ideas and information from texts written in different styles about a variety of topics...
  • Another way to put it: You are ready to take advanced courses, if you feel somewhat comfortable using the present and the past tenses...

...and you also have been working with the subjunctive mood for a while... even if you still don't master its use.

You do? / You can? / You have?
Then I encourage you to join an advanced class. Welcome!

    Advanced Proficiency.
You should attend the Tertulia, if most of the following apply:

    Speaking
In other words, you show some fluency; perhaps sometimes you hesitate, but you make yourself understood.

Sometimes you make mistakes and mispronounce some words, but in general you are understood without needing to repeat much.
  • You can talk about yourself, your friends and family members; you can explain what you do for a living.
  • You can also discuss topics relating to your particular interests; you can talk about subjects you have just recently learned about. Sometimes, you have also been able to support your opinions.
  • You can explain some of your stuff in detail.
  • Reading
Perhaps sometimes you miss some details (or maybe you get them wrong), but you understand the main concepts, facts and points.
  • You can read descriptive and narrative prose of several paragraphs in length. In doing so, you can learn facts about issues, opinions and ideas you were not previously familiar with.
  • You can read some simple short stories and essays; brief samples of uncomplicated poetry. You may need to read some of these materials more than once; it doesn't matter.
  • Does this somewhat describe you?

Then I really encourage you to join the tertulia.
    Come!
